My husband never went to bakeries when growing up and had never heard of cream cheese frosting for cupcakes, he only heard of the cream cheese spread you put on a bagel and didn’t like it. So when I was beginning my journey as a custom cake decorator and began experimenting with recipes, he was pretty skeptical that a frosting made with cream cheese could taste good. A few months after coming up with the recipe, he finally tried it and loved it. He even learned how to make it as those early months of owning our bakery One Sweet Slice required that he learn how to bake cakes and make all of our signature frostings.
The joys of a Red Velvet cupcake are not complete without the perfect cream cheese frosting for it. We have all had that cheap stuff you find at some bakeries and big box stores. What a turn off! Now this is the real deal and its refreshing for the taste buds. A quality cream cheese frosting will make your cupcake, no matter the kind, taste better.
The red velvet cupcake recipe is not only one of my favorites but my customers at One Sweet Slice have voted it one of their favorites as well! This cupcake is moist, red and perfect. We bake this cupcake year round so all can enjoy.
This recipe can be found in my One Sweet Year of Cupcakes recipe book but there is a twist to it. You can find our red velvet cream cheese frosting recipe on the blog as well.

Three years ago I was laid off from my ‘stable’ corporate job. My pride was hurt, I was one of the top sales reps in the office, handling the largest accounts in Utah and it was a couple of days after Christmas. When I went home early I didn’t tell Janell, I couldn’t break the news to her at that time. Her family was in town and I didn’t want to put a downer on the fun holiday that we had. After her family left, I told her. We were both a little stunned but at the same time knew the company I worked for was having financial issues which eventually led to them laying off about half their sales reps. To give you more of an idea of our situation: Janell was due with our fourth child 6 weeks later. (more…)
Hi. My name is Janell Brown, and this is my crazy husband Trent. Well, from the picture you can tell which of the two of us is more crazy. We have been married for over 11 years and have four kids. Now they’re the ones who are really crazy. Don’t worry, you’ll get to see photos and learn all about them. We were a pretty normal family, lived in the burbs, I stayed at home with the kids, Trent worked his corporate 9-5 job, dance and soccer for the kids, crafts, book clubs and play groups for me. I also had a little hobby on the side. (more…)
